I enjoyed your take on the 5,000 year claim, of course apart from the myth of the Yellow Emperor, one also has to disregard the Mongol and Manchu invasions, occupation and subjugation of the Han/Song/Chinese. I'd presume that would've put an end to the 'longest, continuous civilisation'? But apparently not, after all, as we all know, Mongols and Manchu's are really Chinese (just don't tell a Mongolian that).

Anyhow, my take is that the 5,000 year myth is taught and for more insidious, nationalistic reasons: and if past history is any guide then I have an idea where the revival of the great Han race will lead.

One question, I still have trouble working out what 'Chinese' is? I presumed it was similar to 'British' but apparently that is incorrect.

China's Imperial Way by Kevin Bishop and Annabel Roberts (25 Sep 1997) precedes
The Emperor’s River: Travels to the Heart of a Resurgent China (2010)

Seeing how a Pound Lock works I think you will find an illustration by William Alexander ( the British 1793 attempt to establish an embassy with the Qing ) shows how this system was used.
These paintings were published as a book in 1804.
